Acne (Acne Vulgaris) is a skin condition caused by changes in the hair follicle and sebaceous gland unit (pilosebaceous apparatus) in the skin.
Acne usually affects young adolescence who are already going through an emotional time and feel socially insecure. Therefore, the psychological impacts of acne on these individuals could lead to denting their self-esteem, depression, anxiety and even lead to attempts of suicide.
Despite our vast knowledge about acne, we do not know why some people get acne and others do not. However, it is well-known that excess natural oily (sebum) production by the sebaceous glands clogs up the pores and, in the presence of dead cells and p.acnes bacterium, leads to inflammatory response.
Some of the other factors linked to acne are:
A family history.
Hormonal factors, particularly male sex hormones (androgens), causes hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands and makes them larger producing more sebum.
Emotional factors, such as stress through increased output of hormones such as adrenaline from adrenal gland.
Drugs containing: iodides, chlorides, bromides, such as lithium, barbiturates, androgens, narcotics opiates and opioids, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS), insulin-like growth factor1 and anabolic steroids.
Medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing's syndrome.
The problem with acne is complicated by the fact that, nobody can predict its resolution and its natural course may take decades. Therefore, early and aggressive treatment is advocated to lessen the overall impact of acne.
At our cosmetic surgery clinic, Doctors Makeover, apart from usual medical treatment, we use lasers and IPL to treat acne. Although lasers are not a cure for severe inflammatory acne, they might provide rapid resolution lasting several months. Laser treatment of acne also attacks the bacterium and stimulates new and healthy skin formation. When the treated area is healed, the scar or blemish is usually a lot less noticeable than before. The effectiveness of this treatment depends both on the type of skin and the extent and severity of scars but some improvement can be achieved in almost all cases.
We also offer other treatment options for acne and acne scars such as microdermabrasion (BioSkin Sonolight) and Chemical Peels.
