Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition in which the nerve (median nerve) is compressed in the wrist.

Why does it occur?

Because the boundaries of the wrist tunnel, through which the median nerve together with 9 ligaments passes, is made of bones on three sides and a ligament at the front. Therefore, the nerve can be compressed by an increase in the size of the contents or reduction in the size of the canal, leading to pain, change in sensation (paresthesias) and muscle weakness in the hand.

What are the main symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome usually affects both hands and one of the early symptoms of this condition is "pins and needles" in the thumb, index and middle fingers. Change in sensation, pain and weakness in the hands are among other symptoms.

What are the causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Although repetitive trauma and some other conditions are implemented in causation of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, most cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are unknown in origin (idiopathic).

How do you treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a team approach policy. After careful initial assessment further tests to confirm correct diagnosis are carried out. There are a number of possible options available for treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome including: massage therapy, immobilizing the wrist by braces, physiotherapy and medication such as steroid injection. However, one should also consider the possibility of any underlying disease or condition such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Ultimately, surgery for release of the median nerve needs to be carried out and the ligamentous part of the carpal tunnel (retinaculum) will be divided to release the pressure on the nerve and facilitate the nerve recovery process. At our cosmetic surgery clinic, Doctors Makeover, we carry out the procedure as a Day Case Surgery under local anaesthesia, this means it is safer and you are able to walk away straight after the procedure. The whole operation takes less than an hour in duration and it is much more affordable.

There may be some discomfort, bruising and swelling at the site of the operation and we will supply you with a comprehensive post-operative follow-up and care plan on the day of the operation.

The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome operation is a clean operation with very minimal complications but one needs to be aware of the risks and the surgeon will discuss them at the consultation.
