What are dermal fillers?
The process of ageing is complex but, as we age, the skin loses some of its supporting tissues and scaffolding, and wrinkles and folds appear on our skin. Fillers are placed, usually under the skin, to fill up tiny gaps and support the skin resulting in a natural lift and tightening of the overlying skin. Fillers may also add volume and youthful appearance to the skin.
What different fillers are there?
Generally speaking, on the basis of the duration of their effect and their longevity, fillers can be divided into three groups:
Short-acting fillers like Restylane which can last for as little as three months but usually last longer, for up to a year. Evolence®, Evolence® BreezeTM are collagen products with a similar or slightly longer duration of effect.
Medium-term such as Sculptra which has also been marketed as a volume expander and volumiser and its effect can last about three years. There are other medium-term dermal fillers, such as Outline.
Permanent fillers such as fat transfer, which has the advantage of being your own fat tissue without risk of allergy and any disease transmission. Although they have a long-lasting effect, the drawback is the formation of a firm and palpable lump under the skin and, because it is a permanent procedure, any adjustments or mistakes cannot easily be rectified.
What fillers do you use in your clinic?
We only use products which have consistently demonstrated predictability and safety in clinical use. At our cosmetic surgery clinic, Doctors Makeover, we use Restylane more than other Hyaluronic Acid (which is a natural component of our skin make-up) dermal fillers for the non-surgical cosmetic treatment of:
nasolabial groove
fine lines on the forehead
enhancing lips
other lines and folds on the face, for example, smokers lines on the lips.
There are other longer acting alternative fillers in use in our clinic such as Sculptra and Outline. The doctor will help and advise you on making up your own mind at the initial consultation.
