Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) |
Botox for Treatment of Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Excessive sweating is a common and embarrassing condition that affects both men and women. Medical history and examination might reveal no underlying cause for excessive sweating which stains clothes with relatively unpleasant body odour.
Is Botox effective in the treatment of excessive sweating?
Yes, it is now established that Botox is an effective treatment for troublesome excessive perspiration. The Botox injection reduces sweat production by sweat glands in these sites for up to a year and results in improvement in body odour.
At Doctors Makeover we also use Botox for cosmetic treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.
Where do you use Botox for excessive sweating?
At Doctors Makeover, we use Botox for excessive sweating both in the armpits (axillae) and the palms of the hands. We might also be able to use Botox for other parts of the body, depending on special circumstances.
What is Botox?
Botox is a derivative of chemicals produced by Clostridium botulinum Welchii bacteria. When Botox is injected into the armpits or palm of the hand, it reversibly stops the chemical messages from the nerve to the sweat glands, therefore, reversibly blocking the production of sweat in those areas.
At Doctors Makeover, we always use high quality products from only reliable sources. We normally use Botox (Allergan); but occasionally we also use Dysport (Ipsen Biopharm).
Is there anything I should do before the Botox injection?
No, but if you are taking any medication or you have any health problems you should bring it to the attention of the doctor. At Doctors Makeover, you will have a consultation with a trained, highly qualified doctor who is also fully registered with the GMC in the United Kingdom before your Botox injection. Once you are in the clinic for the injection, we apply local anaesthetic cream to numb the area before the injection.
Is Botox safe to use?
Botox is safe in experienced hands and its usage in cosmetic treatment has been proven with consistent safety records for more than 20 years. We will discuss the pros and cons of each method at the time of your initial consultation with the doctor.
Is there anything I should do after the Botox injection?
At Doctors Makeover, we routinely supply you with a post-injection information sheet including 24 hour contact details of the doctor so, if there are any worries, you can contact the doctor. We also offer a copy of your consent form if you want it for your own records.
