Sebaceous cysts are blocked oil glands in the skin (sebaceous gland). They are benign skin lesions in nature and spherical in shape. Sebaceous cysts occur more commonly in hairier parts of the body. Therefore, sebaceous cysts do not occur in hairless palms of the hands and soles of the feet but are often seen on the head (scalp), neck, back, face, ears, arms and genital area.
Treatment of sebaceous cysts is a minor surgical procedure for excision of the cyst under local anaesthesia. The cyst is painless and contains chunky whitish material. Infected sebaceous cysts are red, tender, swollen and painful and their content changes in nature and color.
