Verrucas and Warts
Warts are localised horny projections which are caused by viral infection termed; human papilloma virus. They are a lump of cells which are benign in nature. Although cervical cancer is related to this viral infection, it is thought ordinary warts are usually harmless.
Warts can go away but more often they spread to infect other parts of the body and other people. There are many non surgical and surgical treatments for warts including applying chemicals, freezing and laser treatment. Diathermy and surgical removal are other options. However genital and anal warts are best managed in a specialist clinic as they are usually a sexually transmitted disease in nature.
Plantar warts (verrucas)
Plantar warts are also known as verrucas and appear on the sole of the foot. Weight bearing forces the wart into the deeper tissues producing localised pain particularly on walking. Treatment of plantar warts is by application of chemicals and if necessary localised surgical intervention is undertaken.
